Overview
Lumina is a privacy-first personal knowledge management app for iOS.
We believe your notes, thoughts, and ideas belong to you—and only
you. This privacy policy explains how Lumina handles your data.
The short version: All AI processing happens on
your device. We don't collect, store, or transmit your personal data
to our servers. Your notes never leave your device unless you
explicitly choose to back them up to your personal iCloud account.
Data Collection and Storage
What Data Is Stored Locally on Your Device
Lumina stores the following data locally on your iPhone or iPad:
-
Notes: All text notes, voice transcriptions, and
captured text from images
-
Entities: Automatically extracted people, places,
organizations, and projects from your notes
-
Metadata: Creation dates, modification dates,
note view counts, and language information
-
AI Models: Downloaded AI models for voice
transcription and text generation (stored in app container)
-
Search Indexes: Local search indexes to enable
fast search across your notes
-
App Preferences: Your settings choices, theme
preferences, and selected AI model
All of this data is stored exclusively on your device using iOS
standard storage mechanisms with encryption at rest provided by iOS.
What Data We Do NOT Collect
Lumina does not collect, transmit, or store on external servers:
- Your notes or note content
- Voice recordings or transcriptions
- Photos or text captured via camera
- Search queries or search history
- AI-generated answers or responses
- Entity data or knowledge graph information
- Personal information (name, email, phone number, etc.)
- Location data
- Device identifiers for tracking purposes
How Your Data Is Processed
On-Device AI Processing
All artificial intelligence features in Lumina run entirely on your
device:
-
Voice Transcription: Voice notes are transcribed
using on-device speech recognition (Whisper AI). Audio is
processed locally and never sent to external servers.
-
Text Recognition (OCR): Text captured from images
is processed using iOS Vision framework on your device.
-
Entity Recognition: People, places, and
organizations are identified using on-device CoreML models.
-
Semantic Search: Search indexes and vector
embeddings are computed on your device using CoreML.
-
AI Answers: Question answering uses on-device
language models (Llama). Your questions and generated answers
never leave your device.
-
Knowledge Graph: Connection analysis and graph
visualization happen locally on your device.
No cloud processing: Lumina does not use external
APIs or cloud services for any AI features.
iCloud Backup (Optional)
How iCloud Backup Works
Lumina offers an optional iCloud backup feature
that you can enable in Settings:
-
When enabled, Lumina creates encrypted backups of your notes and
data
- Backups are stored in your personal iCloud Drive account
-
Backups are encrypted by Apple using your iCloud encryption keys
-
Only you can access these backups using your Apple ID credentials
- We (Lumina developers) cannot access your iCloud backups
- You can disable iCloud backup at any time in Settings
What's Included in iCloud Backups
If you enable iCloud backup, the following data is backed up to your
iCloud Drive:
- All notes and their content
- Entities and entity relationships
- Note metadata (creation dates, modification dates, etc.)
- Search indexes and embeddings
Downloaded AI models are not backed up to iCloud (they can be
re-downloaded on any device).

What Permissions Lumina Requests and Why
Lumina may request the following iOS permissions:

transcription. Voice recordings are not stored—only the transcribed
text is saved.

Live Text feature
